Rose & Garden Weekend
Flower and garden lovers will love an expanded Rose & Garden Weekend, showcasing regional special events and exhibits on June 18 through 20. This year, Elizabeth Park’s Rose Weekend (the centerpiece of the festival) celebrates its 100th anniversary.
Bushnell Park’s 90th Birthday
Downtown Hartford’s Bushnell Park celebrates its 150th anniversary with a year-long series of events and activities showcasing this treasure, located at the foot of the Connecticut State Capitol. Inside the park it’s the 90th birthday for the historic Bushnell Park Carousel, refurbished this season with genuine 23 Karat gold leaf! Still just a 50-cent ride for children and adults.
Steam Trains & Riverboats
Essex Steam Train and Riverboat and Chester/Hadlyme Ferry join forces to offer a brand new train and ferry excursion. Visitors train the beautiful Connecticut River Valley countryside, then ferry the Connecticut River to the base of the hill below the famous Gillette Castle, for hiking or visits to the eclectic home of the late William Gillette, famous for his portrayal of Sherlock Holmes on the stage.
Amistad
Freedom Schooner Amistad will sail up the Connecticut River and dock in Downtown Hartford from July 6-10, just hundreds of feet away from where the historic 1839 trial of the real ship’s Mendi tribesmen took place in the Old State House’s Senate Chambers. Our region features several special exhibits about the Amistad and visitors can tour nearby Farmington where the tribesmen lived until their return to Africa in 1841.
